Student Training for Academics and Retention(STARS) Workshop Series

Program Summary

The Student Training for Academics and Retention (S.T.A.R.) Workshop series is an academic enrichment program intended to support students that have experienced difficulty transitioning to college.  The program will also assist readmitted students to gain the skills necessary to be successful in completing their academic goals in order to matriculate to graduation.  Workshops will topics will include but not limited to: decision making, time management skills and test taking, utilizing campus resources, and understanding your syllabus. The overall of goal of this program is to assist in the increase of academic retention at Shaw University.

Program Goals

The S.T.A.R.S. program will address the academic needs of students who have displayed academic difficulty transitioning to the university setting. Student participants will be introduced to needed skills to address maintaining good academic standing based upon Satisfactory Academic Process policy. S.T.A.R.S. will:

  • Assist with increasing retention and graduation rates
  • Build strong support system among student body
  • Increase student communication with faculty members
  • Foster and encourage marketable skills among student participants
