Alumnus Donald Mitchell Recognized as an Emerging Rising Leader

May 16, 2014 – Shaw graduate Donald Mitchell, Jr.’06, an assistant professor of higher education at Grand Valley State University, is one of 23 University of Minnesota’s College of Education & Human Development (CEHD) emerging rising leaders. Mitchell is recognized in a new web profile series as a CEHD alumnus that has achieved early distinction in his career, demonstrated emerging leadership, or shown exceptional volunteer service in his community. He received his Ph.D. in higher education from CEHD.

Mitchell is dedicated to improving educational environments for underrepresented populations who have been marginalized by existing systems and cultures. He is actively engaged in research on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, intersectionality, Black Greek-letter organizations, and equity, diversity and inclusion in higher education. He has an outstanding early record of scholarship and publication. Mitchell volunteers with Grand Rapids Public Schools and received the Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo Memorial Award for Emerging Scholarship from the American Educational Research Association.
