Athena Curry '14 Tells WRAL-TV About Her Shaw Experience

June 11, 2014 - Athena Curry is the first in her family to attend and finish college, but the freshly-graduated Shaw University alumna sees the milestone as only the beginning.

"My family's generational curse has been making way, just making do," she said. "Just settling for being comfortable. And I wanted to go above being comfortable and be above average and just do more than what meets the eye."

Curry, a WRAL broadcast technician, was very active on campus. A mass communications major from Charlotte, Curry was also a resident advisor, Miss Freshman, junior class vice-president and was on the yearbook committee.

As senior class president, Curry wrote and presented a speech during graduation. Her words called on fellow graduates to achieve their goals and give back to their school.

"It's up to us to remember where we came from,” she said in her speech. “It’s up to us to give back to a place that has given us so much. We must continue to love and support Shaw University just as she has loved and supported us."

Curry hopes to become an entertainment attorney and also own a shopping plaza.
