The theme/purpose of the conceptual framework undergirding the
Department of Education's programs is to produce graduates who are
critical thinking problem solvers with the knowledge, pedagogical,
and technological skills, and professional dispositions needed to
function as effective teachers in a diverse world.
Partnering Programs with the Department of Education:
Shaw University Academic Enrichment Academy
The Shaw University Academic
Enrichment Academy is providing free afternoon school tutorials in
reading and mathematics for students in kindergarten through eighth
grades (SES program). This is the third year of SES tutorials. The
afterschool tutorials are being provided to 11 school systems during
the 2010-2011 school year. Students receive 30 hours of tutorials
and are served on a 1:5 student teacher ratio. The curriculum is
research-based and includes PSPs for reinforcement of individual
learning goals. Pretests and posttests from previous years indicate
that the students have grown a minimum of 5% each year. Most
students demonstrated 6 – 10% growth as a result of the 30 hour
tutorials.
Shaw University Center for Early Childhood Education
The Shaw University Center for Early Childhood Education,
Development, and Research is a division of the Department of
Education. The Center’s mission is to serve as a teaching and
research facility for Shaw students, faculty, and staff, as well as
a source of professional development for childcare providers, pre-
and in-service teachers, and other professionals who work with young
children and their families.
