Mass Communications Students Sweep Environmental PSA Competition

March 13, 2014 – Eight Shaw University Mass Communications students received awards in the City of Raleigh’s Environmental PSA competition. The City established the Environmental Awards to recognize outstanding work in environmental stewardship and to recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment in our community.

In addition to Shaw, students from Living Arts College and North Carolina State University showcased their creativity and talent by submitting 30-second public service announcements (PSAs). The winning submissions will be used as part of the city’s outreach and education program to raise awareness of the Value of Water.

  • First Place - Matthew Coleman & Ahkeem Bowens, Video entitled: “Wasting Water/Wasting Time”
  • Second Place - Victoria Rodrigues, Video entitled: “Wasting Water”
  • Third Place - The Waters Team (Troy Thomas, Courtland Gingles, Unique Staggers, Ariel Hatcher, Dennis McKniver), Video entitled: “The Water Brothers”

Award winners will receive cash awards in the amount of: $1,500 for first place, $750 for second place and $500 for third place, in addition to an engraved water carafe as a trophy. Awards will be presented at the 2014 City of Raleigh Environmental Awards Celebration held Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Cassandra Mitchell, chair of the Mass Communications Department and Watricia Shuler, assistant professor of Film and Video Production helped the students with crafting their PSAs.
