Yes, all first-time students must attend orientation, whether you are an undergraduate, graduate or CAPE student. 2. Is there a cost for orientation? The cost for orientation is included in the $200 Enrollment Deposit. For your convenience, we have multiple payment options. You can pay online or call the cashier’s office at 919-546-8655. 3. How do I register for orientation? Once all required documents have been submitted, you will receive communication from the Office of Student Retention to register. 4. What should I bring to orientation? Valid driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID Financial information (access to tax returns) to complete your FAFSA and financial aid packaging Official high school transcripts Up-to-date medical history form signed by a physician Comfortable pair of shoes Cell phone charger Umbrella 5. Can family members come to orientation? Yes, we would love to have your family attend orientation with you. They will have an opportunity to experience what your life will be like as a Shaw Bear. Orientation Program Questions Question Answer 1. What should I expect at new student orientation? We want you to have an EPIC orientation experience. We have a day planned for you and your family to experience life as a Shaw U Bear and learn the wonderful and exciting opportunities of the Shaw experience. The Shaw U experience includes: getting to know our caring faculty and staff who’ll treat you like family, engaging in the student social life and discovering the benefits of going to a University located in the heart of downtown Raleigh. You will also have the opportunity to complete enrollment paperwork. However, we highly encourage you to complete that before orientation so that you can enjoy the full orientation experience. 2. How long is orientation? Orientation is a one-day event and begins at 8:00 a.m. and usually ends around 5:00 p.m. This allows students and families to have a fun-filled day while also completing the enrollment and registration processes. 3. What is my Student ID#? Your student ID# is very important. It is given to you when you apply for admissions. You will need it to register for classes and to receive your student login credentials when you come for orientation. 4. How will I know if I completed everything during the information sessions at orientation? To be fully packaged and ready to start school, you will need to complete all enrollment steps: Step 1: Submit Online Enrollment Confirmation Form. This form must be submitted within two weeks of receiving confirmation letter. Step 2: Complete the housing reservation form and pay $200 non-refundable enrollment deposit. Step 3: Submit an up-to-date medical history form signed by a physician and your up-to-date immunization record. Step 4: Receive financial aid, complete the FAFSA form (Shaw University's school code 002962). Students should also complete the UNCF Profile and Master Promissory Note for Loans forms. 5. Will I get a tour of my academic major department? You will get a tour of your academic major department, see where your major courses are held and also get a taste of the clubs, activities and expectations for your major. How can I prepare to have a great first year? Ensure you are ready to live on campus and have everything you need for your dorm room by checking out our Residence Life Information Packet. Have an excellent academic experience by getting to know your academic advisor and the faculty who teach your major courses. If you don’t know who they are yet, find them via our academic affairs directory. Also, remember First-Year Experience is the program dedicated to helping students transition into college life and connecting them to the resources they need to be successful.
