October 15, 2010 - Shaw University President Irma McClaurin launched a “Listening Tour” to reach out to university students, faculty, staff, alumni groups and community members. Her first stop included a luncheon with student leaders to listen to their concerns and gather valuable feedback about their university experience.

“Dr. McClaurin has shown that she truly wants to be involved with our student body,” said Blair Carter, Student Government Association Internal Vice President. “I appreciated her needing and wanting to be at student events and meeting with her student leaders frequently. This truly shows that she is here for the betterment of the university.”

The President’s tour continued in Houston, TX, where she met with members of the Brentwood Baptist Church, a leading relational church aimed at creating spiritual outreach programs and building community relationships. She urged members to continue supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the important work they do to educate our students in the 21st century.

In addition, the “Listening Tour” stopped in New York, where President McClaurin met with the Shaw University New York and New Jersey Alumni Chapters. She spoke to alumni regarding university initiatives and listened to their comments about how they can continue to support the university.

“The goal of my “Listening Tour” is to truly hear concerns and assess the needs of Shaw’s constituents,” said President McClaurin. “They provide invaluable resources, time and commitment to the university and we are obligated to be responsive.”

The tour will continue with local stops in North Carolina.
