Shaw University Announces Janus Adams as Founder’s Day Convocation Speaker

Adams is the author of ten books and creator of the award-winning BackPax children’s book-and-audio series which has been lauded as a “Best of the Best” by the American Library Association, a USA Today “Best Bet!” and named among the “100 Best Products Ever” by curriculum specialists. A frequent on-air guest and former talk show host, she has appeared on AirAmerica, BET, CNN and The Today Show.   She’s been featured in Essence and Ms., magazines, The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today.  Her broadcast commentaries are heard on NPR and FoxNews, and her syndicated column is in its fifteenth year.

Her Glory Days book trilogy has given birth to Glory Days-in-Concert and a successful McDonald’s campaign during Black History month that reached over 3.1 million people.   In addition, she is currently in development of the first-ever documentary history of African American women for PBS:   Glory Days:   A Tradition of Achievement to be directed by breakthrough filmmaker Julie Dash.

Adams is a founding board member of AmistadAmerica, the historic replica schooner and was one of 30 women named to the “30 women making history” list during the 30th anniversary of Women’s History Month.

During convocation, Shaw University President Irma McClaurin will confer an honorary degree on behalf of the university to Adams. Adams received a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre from the State University of New York - New Paltz and her Master’s degree from Mills College in Oakland, CA.  Her master’s was the nation’s first graduate degree in Black Studies.


Shaw University was founded in 1865 and is the oldest historically black university in the south. Shaw University is a private, co-educational, liberal arts University that awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The primary mission of Shaw University is teaching with the commitment to maintain excellence in research and academic programs that foster intellectual enhancement and technological skills.
