November 18, 2010 - Shaw President Dr. Irma McClaurin was presented with the key to the City of Durham by the city’s mayor, William V. “Bill” Bell. The presentation was part of the United Negro College Fund’s Mayor’s Reception, “An Evening of Entertainment and Giving,” hosted by the Durham UNCF Steering Committee.
“Shaw is often seen as a Raleigh institution,” said Dr. McClaurin. “This key is a symbol of just how regional the university truly is, and how dedicated we are to ensuring that Shaw works with those within the region and the state.”
Bell served as the Honorary Chair for the Mayor’s Reception which raised money for Shaw and the UNCF. The evening included an address by Dr. McClaurin, a saxophone performance by Shaw faculty member Ron Baxter, and presentations by UNCF scholars currently studying at Shaw.
The key to the city of Durham gives the Shaw President a matched set, as she was presented with the key to the city of Raleigh last month at a meeting of Triangle business leaders.
