Raleigh, NC (January 26, 2011) –
Shaw University is one of 40 schools just selected to attend the 2011 Symposium on Financial Literacy and College Success at Minority-Serving Institutions.  The symposium takes place February 22-25 in Dallas, TX.

Dr. Jeffrey Smith, Vice President for Student Affairs and Administration at Shaw, will lead a three-person team to the event, which focuses on institutional strategies for helping students understand the financial realities of attending college.  Such understanding will help eliminate student loan defaults and students leaving school early for financial reasons.

“This is a great opportunity for Shaw,” said Dr. Smith.  “While we feel we do a good job in this area, this gives us a chance to hear what others are doing and see the most up-to-date strategies as well as what is working at other institutions.”

Shaw submitted a proposal to attend the event, and was one of only 40 schools selected.  The symposium is sponsored by USA Funds and the Institute for Higher Education Policy.

Shaw University was founded in 1865 and is the oldest historically black university in the south. Shaw University is a private, co-educational, liberal arts University that awards degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The primary mission of Shaw University is teaching with the commitment to maintain excellence in research and academic programs that foster intellectual enhancement and technological skills.
