Shaw Program Featured in Hartnett County Daily Record
March 31, 2011 - Shaw's partnership with Hartnett County Schools and the Lillington STAR Free Will Baptist Church has been recently featured in the Hartnett County's newspaper, The Daily Record.
Shaw has partnered with the other two organizations to form the Historically Minority Colleges and University (HMCU) Academy to help tutor economically disadvantaged children in Hartnett County in math and English in order to help them gain higher scores on the end-of-grade tests.
The program, which is funded by a federal grant, is open to students in the Title One program in which they receive free or reduced price lunch.
The program in Hartnett County is run by Derrick Justice, Pastor of the Free Will Baptist Church and an instructor in English at Shaw. Currently 26 students take part in the program, but Justice hopes to gain grant funding to expand the program to 75 students.
Shaw students serve as tutors in the program which aims to give students in second from fifth grades assistance in math and English.
