City To Honor Shaw Champions As Part of Farmers Market Opening 

April 27, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) -  The Shaw University sports champions will be honored as part of the Raleigh Downtown Alliance's Spring Fling to celebrate the opening of the Downtown Raleigh Farmers Market on Wednesday, April 27.  The Spring Fling will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. while the ceremony honoring the champions Bears will begin at 10:30 in City Plaza on Fayetteville Street.

"Shaw has strong ties to the city, so it is particularly exciting to be part of the opening of the Downtown Farmers Market ," said Shaw University President Dr. Irma McClaurin.  "Our student athletes have demonstrated their contribution to the Shaw legacy of endurance, perseverance, and champions; we are immensely proud of them. "

The celebration will honor the 2010 CIAA Football champions and the 2011 Men's and Women's Basketball champions, as well as the most recently crowned Shaw champs - the 2011 Men's Tennis Champions, who won the title Saturday.

In addition, WSHA-FM will be broadcasting live as part of their phone-a-thon to raise funds for the Shaw Disaster Relief Fun.

The Spring Fling will also feature a bluegrass music band, local artists creating market-inspired painting, free cupcakes, plus the Farmers Market, which features the best in locally grown produce, North Carolina soft-shell crabs and scallops, grass-fed beef and so much more.


Shaw University was founded in 1865 and is the oldest historically black university in the south.
