Shaw University Celebrates the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

 

January 13, 2012 –  January Shaw University will celebrate the life and times of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 13 at 12:00pm. The commemorative service includes several musical selections from the Shaw University and Bugg Elementary School Children’s Choirs. A special dramatic performance and litany of remembrance will also be presented at the event.

The commemorative service includes several musical selections from the Shaw University and Bugg Elementary School Children’s Choirs. A special dramatic performance and litany of remembrance will also be presented at the event.

The service will take place in the Thomas Boyd Chapel located at 118 East South Street, Raleigh, NC on the Shaw University campus. Media coverage is invited. Media attending the event should contact the Public Relations Office for parking information. In addition, a second tribute to Dr. King, sponsored by the Beta Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will be held at the Chapel on Sunday, January 15 at 7:06pm.

Dr. King’s actions helped to engage Shaw students in the civil rights movement. In 1960, Shaw students formed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC emerged as one of the top civil rights organization in the nation, organizing student-led protests, marches, sit-ins and voter registration drives.
