Sir Walter Raleigh Supports the Shaw Bears
RALEIGH, NC (March 22, 2012) – Sir Walter Raleigh, namesake of North Carolina’s capitol city, shows his support today for the Shaw University Bears. His statue, located in front of the Raleigh Convention Center, was adorned with the Shaw University athletic flag by members of the university’s athletic and public relations departments. Convention center officials contacted the university and offered them the opportunity to place the flag on Sir Walter in recognition of the Shaw University Women’s Basketball team’s NCAA Division II Final Four appearance. The team defeated Rollins (Fla) 87-71 last night to advance to Friday’s championship game against #2 Ashland. Sir Walter Raleigh now appears with both the Shaw University flag and fellow Raleigh university NC State’s athletic jersey.
Shaw University was founded in 1865 and is the first historically black university in the South.
