Lady Bears Honored by North Carolina House Resolution

June 12, 2012 – The North Carolina House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 1143 - a resolution honoring the Shaw Lady Bears basketball team for winning the national championship. The vote was 114-0 in favor of passage.

The resolution honors the team for its continued success on and off the basketball court, listing historical accomplishments such as their nine CIAA titles, as well as their academic success.

"This championship brings honor not only to Shaw," said Rep. Rosa Gill (Wake), a Shaw alumna and one of the sponsors of the bill.  "It brings honor to Raleigh, Wake County and the entire state of North Carolina."  Gill spoke after a full reading of the resolution and recognition of Shaw guests in the gallery.

Rep. Deborah Ross (Wake), a co-sponsor of the bill, also spoke, recognizing Shaw for the championship as well as acknowledging the role Title IX has played in the rise of women's collegiate athletics.

The other primary co-sponsors of the bill were Rep. Larry Hall (Durham) and Rep. Darren Jackson (Wake).

The resolution also honored Shaw's long-time athletic director, football coach and baseball coach, the late Dr. James E. Lytle.
