Shaw Alum Introduces First Lady
August 29, 2012 – David Selman, a 2009 Shaw graduate, had the honor of introducing the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, at a recent grassroots rally in Philadelphia. The First Lady encouraged attendees to help organize their communities to get out and vote on November 6.
Selman is the Southwest Philadelphia Field Organizer for Obama for America, President Obama's re-election campaign. His general responsibilities include educating residents on the President's policies and initiatives and explaining the President's re-election platform. Selman began the position in March of 2012 and was extended the invitation to introduce the First Lady after several months of working and organizing volunteers for the campaign.
"She is an amazing woman," said Selman, when asked about meeting the First Lady for the first time. "I was really glad that she told the people what they needed to hear and not what they wanted to hear."
As part of the campaign's new It Takes One effort, the First Lady also asked attendees at the rally to help grow Obama for America's national grassroots network.
