    Sample Improvement Projects

    Academic Advising Communications & Marketing
    • Investigate the use of Jenzabar's academic advising module to maintain electronic records of academic advising, compared to current practice.
    • Provide continuous faculty training for enhanced academic advising, using exemplary academic advising practices.
    • Require all students withdrawing from the University to have an exit interview with an Academic Advising counselor.
    • Enhance Student Orientation for Fall 2014 (revised schedule and sessions) to create a livened experience for incoming Freshmen.
    • Strengthen the Shaw University brand and build a website that reflects our brand, mission and vision.
    • Create an Office of BAM! The purpose of this office would be to create an enhanced customer experience in all facets of customer relations.
    • Enhance the current University calendar of events by creating a master calendar webpage.
    • Improve our social media presence to reflect marketing objectives.

      Community Engagement Fiscal Affairs
      • Offer the talent of Shaw University's Pep Band, Jazz Ensemble and Choir to the Raleigh community for special events; partner with Downtown Raleigh Alliance.
      • Increase the number of summer camps offered to the Raleigh community to include sports and academic camps for K-12.
      • Invite City of Raleigh leaders to host town hall meetings on campus to increase the interactions between Shaw, the Raleigh community and city government.
      • Partner with Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, NC Opera and other performing arts centers to cultivate our students' appreciation of the arts. 

        • Streamline the University's purchasing policies, practices and processes.
        • Institutionalize the "ONE Card" system for receiving refunds, paying for books and purchasing meals from the cafeteria. 
        • Improve the book voucher issuance process.

          IT, Jenzabar Recruitment & Retention
          • Investigate the use of Jenzabar's Master Resource Reservation system to sync facility reservations with the registrar, as it relates to use of classroom space.
          • Improve Wi-Fi signal across campus, especially the odd levels of dormitories and older buildings.
          • Use technology to optimize the manner in which maintenance requests are made in order to improve the work flow and ensure satisfactory completion of requests.

            • Ramp up recruitment efforts and articulation agreements with schools in Asia, the Middle East, African and the Caribbean.
            • Streamline the online application process for undergraduate and graduate admissions.
            • Develop a Sophomore Experience (SMORE) in order to increase retention efforts between the sophomore and junior years.
            • Re-vitalize Shaw's student exchange program to engage in strategic recruiting with global partners.

              Research Infrastructure Student Engagement
              • Create incentives for grant writing. 
              • Improve the efficiency of the IRB certification process.
              • Increase the number of collaborations with R01 universities in order to strengthen the volume of student exposure to the research setting.
              • Establish a research faculty exchange program with university and industry partners.

                • Hold students to the standard of being a Shaw Man/Shaw Woman. Ensure the standard is based on ethical criteria that are tied to the mission of the University.
                • Reinstate Student Ambassadors to assist with events, and to be outstanding examples of Shaw citizens. 
                • Partner with Shaw alumni to re-establish the mentoring program, to cultivate young men and young women that reflect the Shaw brand.
                • Increase student exposure to experiential learning opportunities (internships, job-shadowing assignments, service learning, national conferences and field trips).

                  Academic Affairs Facilities
                  • Introduce an electronic system of course assessment that is efficient and meets the needs of faculty and students to engage in continuous improvement of student learning.
                  • Explore instating academic programs that are among the top ten nationally and globally.
                  • Streamline CAPE sites and focus on offering targeted academic programs at each site.
                  • Condense syllabi and place some of its contents in the student handbook.

                  • Partner with Duke Energy and Cree to replace all lighting on campus with LED lighting and sensors to conserve energy.
                  • Establish a "Healthy Shaw Living" campaign that starts with increasing the amount of healthy meal choices in the cafeteria.
                  • In keeping with the Smoke Free Campus policy, eliminate the designated on-campus smoking area, as part of a "Healthy Shaw Living" campaign.
                  • Market Shaw University's facilities to external organizations as an event space for conferences, meetings and weddings (Thomas J. Boyd chapel).
