Social Work Students Attend Diversity Recruitment Event

Social Work Students

March 3, 2014 - Shaw University Social Work majors Jack Ellerbe and Hermione Ruffin were selected to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work’s second annual on-campus Diversity Recruitment Event. The event was co-sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the UNC Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs and the UNC Graduate School.

Both students reported that the programs were extremely educational and useful in their pursuit of a graduate degree in social work. Having the opportunity to attend a master’s level course and discuss the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) were among the most beneficial aspects of the event cited by the two students. “The primary take away from the two days was to take the GRE even though you are afraid of it,” said Ellerbe. Both students discussed their experiences as HBCU students and having the opportunity to attend a program at one of the top ten graduate social work schools.
