A Lecture on "Slavery in 18th-Century North Carolina"

The Joel Lane Museum House announces a celebration of Black History Month with a lecture by the renowned African-American historian, Earl Ijames, on "Slavery in 8th-Century North Carolina" on Thursday, February 4 at 7p.m The lecture would take place at the Visitors' Center at 160 South Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Earl Ijames is Curator for African American and Community History at the North Carolina Museum of History. For more information call: (919) 833-3431.
The Joel Lane Museum was built in the 1770s, This landmark is Wake County's oldest existing home. As the center of the old Wake Court House community, it became the "Birthplace of Raleigh" when its owner, Joel Lane, a prominent statesman and soldier, sold 1,000 acres of his plantation for the formation of the new state capital in 1792.

African American History Tour

The North Carolina Museum of History is celebrating the Black History Month
with an African American History tour at the Museum located on Edenton Street, Down town Raleigh. Explore North Carolina's past and learn about its people. See exhibits highlighting the state's military history, decorative arts, sports heroes and more. Special programs include craft demonstrations, music concerts and family events. The Museum is a part of the Office of Archives and History, N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. The Museum Shop, featuring North Carolina crafts, is open daily. Admission is free. Faces & Places of Raleigh's African American Community

Hey kids, ever wondered how places like Chavis Park got its name, or when the first college for African American students was established? You may find out these and other facts about African American communities on Saturday, February 13 at The Raleigh City Museum. You and your family will learn about the rich history of the African American community in Raleigh as the City Museum staff explores "5 Faces & Places" that have shaped Raleigh's history. The Raleigh City Museum is located in the Historic Briggs Building, 220 Fayetteville Street. The Museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m. and Saturday, 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. Admission is free.

Town of Garner Presents Gift 4 Community Variety Shows:

The Town of Garner is presenting a Valentine gift to the community, on the eve of Valentine's Day: "The Gift 4 variety show" celebrates the wealth of talent that resides in this area. Last year's Valentine show played to an enthusiastic audience members. Gift 4 variety show continues in spite of these tough economic times.
