About the Honors College:
The Honors College was practically a safe haven for me when I was trying to hide and escape from going to band practice. It was a place to go to during the day to relax in between classes, study and work on assignments as well as receive words of wisdom from Dr. Leathers. Honors College afforded me the opportunity to become a part of a community of scholars in which I would have not had the opportunity to do so if I attended another institution. The lessons that I learned while in Honors College helped prepared me for graduate school. Some of these lessons include research skills, personal development, and taking advantage of certain opportunities as well as taking risks. The Honors College also provided me the opportunity to take part and hold a leadership position as captain of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge quiz bowl team. The Honors College also provided me the opportunity to attend different conferences across the state of North Carolina and also across the country in which I learned how to fine tune my networking and professional development skills and also made many acquaintances and friends that I still keep in contact with to this day. I remember sitting in an honors seminar and hearing Dr. Leathers say with a firm voice "Once you graduate and get your degree do not settle in taking a job at Wal-Mart -- pursue a job in your major." Those words really motivated me in reaching my goals and aspirations. After I finish my master’s program, I will be pursuing my doctorate either in political science with an emphasis in African American studies or public policy. Another thing that I can truly say about my experience about the Honors College is that I have encountered some wonderful people and cultivated many friendships that I am still in contact with to this day -- basically "Friends for Life." The Honors College is certainly a beacon of light and excellence at Shaw University which shines brightly through its students and alum.
