Miriam K. Young
Miss Shaw University - 2014-2015

Miriam K. Young was crowned Miss Shaw University 2014-2015 on Monday, October 20, 2014.

As Miss Shaw University, she finds fulfillment in inspiring others to take control of their academics and being involved on campus. Miriam’s platform, “M&M: Miriam and Mentors: Celebrating Minority Youth- Discover Your Passion and Live Your Dreams” is derived from her passion to give back in a way that was given to her. As part of her platform, Miriam is targeting “mentees” that are high school seniors in South East Raleigh and freshmen and sophomores at Shaw University.  Partnering with local high schools to do a “Go to Class- Go to College” Campaign, the program will feature tutoring, supporting events at the high school level, and opportunities to invite high school students to campus events.  “M&M Miriam and Mentors” is the platform that will continue to build a firm foundation for current students and future students at Shaw, continuing the University’s mission of advancing knowledge, facilitating student learning and achievement, enhancing the spiritual and ethical values of students, and transforming a diverse community of learners into future global leaders.

Miriam Young is a native of Fayetteville, NC. She is a graduating senior pursuing a degree in Political Science. Upon arrival at Shaw University, she has made every effort to be an active leader on campus from the classroom to student activities. Combining her passions and talents, she has been involved in different campus activities, such as Student Government Association, serving as Freshman Class President and Sophomore Class President; the chapter President of the Beta Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and President of Shaw University’s Honors Scholars Association.  Upon graduation, she hopes to enter a graduate program studying African American History, later earning her doctorate and becoming a professor at the collegiate level and opening a non-profit for minority youth.
