Dr. Stacey Sowell’s fresh ideas, vision steering Shaw University’s enrollment strategy

RALEIGH, N.C. – The addition of Dr. Stacey Sowell as Shaw University’s Vice President of Enrollment Management aligns with the school’s focus to strengthen student retention and prepare graduates for the marketplace. Sowell’s first day on campus is Nov. 13.

“This role affords me that rare opportunity to combine mission with passion. It is not lost on me that I am positioned to steer young people toward an education at a pioneering university that for 100-plus years has modeled what it means to put students first,” Sowell said.

Sowell’s recent work included overseeing student affairs at West Virginia State University, where she provided enrollment strategies. She worked closely with the school’s provost to create a retention plan and develop a path toward increasing student enrollment.

“Dr. Sowell understands what it means to elevate the student experience. She’s a proven leader when it comes to the critical component of campus life. We look forward to her ideas enhancing the lives of students already here, as well as those who’ll arrive as a byproduct of her good work,” Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard said.

Sowell earned an English degree from Shaw University. Her doctorate degree in leadership studies is from N.C. A&T State University.

“It is my distinct pleasure to return to the place that is so dear to my heart. To be in service to Shaw University and all who love her is a great honor and a divine responsibility, and I accept both with a grateful heart,” Sowell said.

Shaw University, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, is the first historically Black institution of higher education founded in North Carolina and is among the oldest in the nation.
