ShawU student leader out front on the issues

RALEIGH — Shaw University Student Government Association President Zaid Steele helped navigate a Feb 12 discussion about gerrymandering and voting rights. Joining her on campus in Estey Hall were students from both Shaw and Saint Augustine’s universities, N.C. Rep. Abe Jones and Congressman Wiley Nickel.

Jones pointed out that while relatively recent laws have made voting tougher, what the legislation did not do is take away the right to vote. It’s about getting educated on the laws and showing up at the polls, he said.

“Stay active. Pay attention. And get others involved,” Jones said.

Nickel said it’s critical to stay up on the issues, get counted in the census and be heard through the ballot box.

“Access to the ballot. Voting rights. Those are the foundational issues that we spend so much time talking about,” Nickel said.
