Mayor Leonardo Williams to Deliver 2025 Commencement Address at Shaw University

Shaw University proudly announces that Durham Mayor Leonardo “Leo” Williams will serve as the 2025 Commencement Speaker, addressing graduates, faculty, and guests during the University’s Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

Mayor Williams’ connection to Shaw is also deeply personal—his mother, Yolanda Bailey, is a proud Shaw University alumna and longtime educator, adding a special layer of legacy to this year’s celebration.

A champion for equity, education, and entrepreneurship, Mayor Williams brings a powerful message of leadership and service grounded in his personal and professional journey. From the classroom to City Hall, his life’s work exemplifies the transformative power of education and community engagement.

Mayor Williams was elected to the Durham City Council in 2021 and sworn in as mayor in 2023. A two-time Teacher of the Year with Durham Public Schools, he has been recognized by the Triangle Business Journal as a “40 Under 40” honoree for his innovative contributions to education.

Williams earned a Bachelor’s in Music Education and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from North Carolina Central University. His educational and leadership experiences ultimately led him and his wife, Zweli, to open Zweli’s, the nation’s first full-service authentic Zimbabwean restaurant.

“Mayor Williams embodies the values we hold dear at Shaw University—leadership, legacy, and service,” said President Dr. Paulette Dillard. “His journey from educator to entrepreneur to elected official is a testament to the power of purpose, and we are honored to welcome him as our 2025 Commencement speaker.”

While continuing to serve the Durham community, Mayor Williams remains deeply committed to advancing economic opportunity, social equity, and educational excellence. He and Zweli are proud parents to their son, Izaiah.
