Shaw University Celebrates Academic Excellence at 2025 Awards Day

Shaw University hosted its annual Awards Day on Thursday, April 24, in the Thomas J. Boyd Chapel, honoring the academic excellence, leadership and achievements of its students.

The ceremony, presented by the Division of Student Affairs, brought together faculty, staff, students, alumni, and families for a campuswide celebration of ShawU Excellence. The event recognized students across all academic programs with distinctions, including the President’s List, Dean’s List, academic honor pins, and honor society inductions.

The program began with a musical prelude from the Shaw University Jazz Ensemble, followed by a welcome from President Paulette R. Dillard.

Keynote speaker and Shaw alumna Sonjia Marie Colson, Class of 2017, inspired students with words rooted in confidence and purpose. “When you look back on this moment, be proud, feel encouraged about every moment of your success and know you can and will do more—because it doesn’t stop here,” Colson said. “Playing small does not serve the world, so be a big stepper, every time you step.”

Dr. Vanessa Raynor Moone, acting vice president of student affairs and presiding host, emphasized the significance of recognizing student achievement.

“Awards Day is one of the most meaningful traditions on our campus,” Moone said. “It’s a moment to pause and honor the students who have persevered, led with integrity and demonstrated the best of what Shaw University stands for. Today is about celebrating their journey—and reminding them there is more ahead.”

The ceremony concluded with recognition of outstanding students by major and honors program scholars, followed by the singing of the Alma Mater and the benediction.

The 2025 Awards Day served not only as a celebration of achievement but also as a reminder of Shaw’s ongoing mission to prepare its students to lead, uplift and serve
