Shaw University Welcomes April Simpkins for Conversation on Mental Health

Shaw University recently had the honor of hosting April Simpkins, co-author of By the Time You Read This: The Space Between Cheslie’s Smile and Mental Illness, for an impactful conversation on mental health. The event, held in the Thomas J. Body Chapel, brought students, faculty, and community members together to discuss the importance of addressing mental health openly and without stigma.

Almost three years following the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Cheslie Kryst, Miss USA 2019, April Simpkins remains committed to sharing Cheslie’s journey to raise awareness about mental health. During her talk, she urged the audience to create an environment where discussing mental health challenges is normalized and accepted.

“We don’t want to talk about it, we shy away from it,” Simpkins said. “But the more we talk about our mental health, the more we create a space where it’s okay to say, ‘I’m not okay.’”

Simpkins’ message centered on the importance of supporting those facing mental health challenges and prioritizing one’s own mental well-being. “We all have mental health to take care of,” she explained. “Keeping our mental health in a good, healthy place is essential.”

She also offered advice to parents, emphasizing that while it’s natural to want to “fix” problems, mental health struggles aren’t something that can be solved immediately. Instead, understanding, compassion, and connection are key to supporting those who are struggling.

Simpkins’ visit to Shaw University in the Thomas J. Body Chapel highlighted the ongoing need for open conversations, better mental health resources, and a supportive community. To read more about Simpkins’ powerful message, click here to read the full feature on WRAL News.
