Shaw University Mourns the Loss of Dr. John Lucas, Sr.

Shaw University deeply mourns the passing of Dr. John Lucas, Sr., a beloved alumnus, Trustee, and former Interim President.

“Dr. Lucas was one of our most cherished pillars,” said Dr. Paulette Dillard, President of Shaw University. “He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, commitment, and leadership that left a lasting impact on the university, his students, and the broader Raleigh-Durham community.”

Throughout his time at Shaw, Trustee Lucas served in several key administrative roles. As Interim President, he remained steadfast in his mission to ensure students had access to the resources and support they needed to thrive.

Board Chairman Dr. Joseph N. Bell shared, “He was an outstanding individual and a mentor to me. His wisdom, friendship, guidance, and support were invaluable. He was deeply respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. As a university community, we will continue to honor and celebrate Dr. Lucas’s extraordinary legacy and the profound influence he had on generations of Shaw Bears.
