Shaw University has long been held in high regard. Nestled in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Shaw is among North Carolina’s greatest and most historic points of pride. Standing as one of the nation’s oldest historically black colleges, Shaw
was the first institution established for the education of African Americans in the South, the first historically black institution to admit women, and as the founding site for the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
in 1960, is heralded by most culturalists as the birthplace of the formal student-based campaign of the American Civil Rights movement.
General Education provides the foundation for students to value life-long learning, leadership and service, be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as the ability to function in an ever-changing global environment.
