Celebrating 64 Years of SNCC

Shaw University is reflecting on 64 years after student activists assembled on campus to establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Student sit-ins in the South in early 1960 led to a gathering of young people that year from April 15-17 at Shaw University culminating in the founding of SNCC. Civil rights leader Ella Baker, a Shaw University alumna from the class of 1927, organized the meeting.

Before becoming the Rev. Dr. David C. Forbes Sr., he was one of the student leaders who helped shape SNCC. He’s the featured guest on “Remixing Politics + Culture” April 14 at 8 p.m.

SNCC Legacy Project Board of Directors Chairman Courtland Cox also was there in the heyday of the movement. He’ll join the show.

Demetrius Noble, an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is an authority on the struggle for Black liberation. His perspective will contextualize the conversation.

Shaw University President Paulette R. Dillard and Shaw University Student Government Association President Zaid Steele will drive home the dialogue when they get into the importance of building upon what SNCC started six decades ago.
