Shaw University is proud to welcome Colin Adams, MA, LCMHCA, to the Department of Psychology, where he brings his expertise, passion, and dedication to educating and mentoring the next generation of mental health professionals.

Adams serves as an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for Shaw University’s Department of Psychology. In his role, Professor Adams advises undergraduate students and teaches courses such as Personality Psychology and History of Psychology. His dedication to educating and mentoring the next generation of mental health professionals is evident in his passion for teaching and serving the community.

Before joining Shaw University, Professor Adams spent 13 years teaching at Saint Augustine’s University. His extensive experience in higher education is complemented by a strong academic background. He earned his graduate training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Psychology, and Criminal Justice, holding degrees from Hampton University.

Professor Adams’ professional experience extends beyond the classroom. With a passion for serving communities in need, his career includes roles in family counseling, juvenile justice, and gang prevention and intervention. As a licensed therapist, he has developed a specific interest in working with couples, college students, and addressing men’s issues such as anxiety, depression, stress/anger management, marriage, and parenting.

His therapeutic approach is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, which allow him to tailor counseling to meet the diverse needs of those he serves. Through these methods, he aims to empower individuals to improve their mental health and well-being.

In his current role at Shaw University, Professor Adams is committed to fostering an environment where students are not only educated but also mentored to become impactful mental health professionals. He is dedicated to shaping future counselors who will go on to make a significant difference in society.

Professor Adams’ philosophy is encapsulated by a quote from W.E.B. DuBois: “Education is that whole system of human training within and without the schoolhouse walls, which molds and develops men.” His work reflects this belief, as he strives to mold the minds and hearts of his students, preparing them to serve and transform communities for years to come.
