Pride, Purpose, and Possibility: Shaw University Celebrates the Class of 2026

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its Commencement ceremony on May 9 at the Raleigh Convention Center, marking a milestone moment filled with reflection, recognition, and a call to purpose.

Family members, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters gathered to honor graduates whose journeys reflect perseverance, sacrifice, and the enduring legacy of the University.

Award-winning actress, producer, and humanitarian Mrs. Edwina Findley Dickerson delivered the keynote address, offering a message centered on purpose, legacy, and the responsibility of leadership.

“Class of 2026, the world is waiting for each and every one of you,” she said.

Throughout her remarks, she encouraged graduates to recognize the support systems that helped them reach this moment and to carry those sacrifices forward, emphasizing the collective effort behind each milestone.

“You are the manifestation of someone else’s dreams. You are the fulfillment of someone else’s prayers,” she said.

In addition to the keynote address, the ceremony recognized individuals whose careers and service reflect excellence across disciplines. Shaw University conferred honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees upon Findley Dickerson, longtime educator and coach Bobby Sanders, and healthcare leader Evelyn Lane Sanders.

Sanders, a Shaw alumnus, was recognized for more than 50 years of service to the University, including a distinguished career as a championship coach, mentor, and advocate for student success. His leadership helped shape generations of student-athletes and expanded access to higher education for countless students.

Evelyn Lane Sanders, a member of the Class of 1971, was honored for her leadership in healthcare and her commitment to serving underserved communities. As founder and chief executive officer of Southeastern Healthcare of North Carolina, she has led the organization’s growth into a trusted provider of care across the state.

The Class of 2026 now joins a distinguished network of Shaw University alumni, prepared to lead, serve, and make an impact in their communities and beyond.
