Dave Walters Jr.: Filmmaker, Futurist, and Face of the Next Generation of Media

Shaw University is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of Dave Walters Jr., a 2024 graduate who is quickly making a name for himself in filmmaking, journalism, and digital media. Walters is a filmmaker, producer, journalist, host, and influencer whose work has earned national recognition, including four Telly Awards highlighting his talent, vision, and growing impact in the industry.

Among his award-winning projects, “Beyond the Barbershop” stands out as a powerful example of storytelling rooted in community. The documentary follows Alsalm “Jomo” Hines, a Raleigh-based barber who offers free and discounted haircuts to Shaw University students and local youth. The film is more than a profile; it is a moving tribute to mentorship, accessibility, and community impact.

“Beyond the Barbershop” earned three Telly Awards in 2024, including a Gold Telly for Best Student Production. The project highlighted the collaborative talent within Shaw’s Department of Mass Communications. Titus Burrell, department chair, served as producer, and Nakya Carter, a fellow Class of 2024 graduate, co-directed the film with Walters. Together, the team brought a local story to life with meaning and national relevance.

In addition to his work on “Beyond the Barbershop,” Walters received another Gold Telly for “CIAA 2025 Preview: What to Expect at the CIAA,” a promotional video that captured the excitement and significance of one of the biggest events in historically Black college and university sports culture.

A Future Fueled by Purpose

Now pursuing a master’s degree in global multimedia journalism and communications at Morgan State University, Walters continues to build momentum. He currently serves as a digital producer and cultural correspondent for Maryland Public Television’s HBCU Week NOW, where his award-winning storytelling reaches audiences nationwide.

“For content creators who feel overlooked, this is proof that authentic voices and dedication can break through,” Walters said. “Winning these awards validates the power of storytelling rooted in culture and community. I am proud to use my platform to uplift Black stories and help shape the future of media.”

Walters’s journey embodies Shaw University’s mission to develop leaders who serve, inspire and create lasting impact in their communities. His achievements are more than a personal milestone; they represent the bold, creative spirit that defines the ShawU.
