Shaw University Marks Historic Enrollment Milestone and Launch of Early College Program

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University is celebrating a historic milestone with the enrollment of 583 new students this fall, a 45% increase over last year and the largest incoming class since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The record-setting enrollment reflects Shaw’s renewed momentum and ongoing efforts to strengthen recruitment, academic programs, and student success initiatives.

“This record-breaking class is the result of Shaw University coming together with one purpose,” said Tanreka Smith, director of admissions and recruitment. “Our admissions team worked tirelessly to ensure every student felt seen, supported and welcomed. This success is proof of what collaboration can achieve and a sign of Shaw’s unwavering commitment to its mission.”

Shaw’s enrollment gains come as historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) nationwide experience a resurgence in applications and visibility. Leaders say the growth at Shaw is not just a reflection of numbers but of a shifting energy on campus.

“This represents a renewed belief in Shaw’s mission and the continuing value of HBCUs,” said Dr. Stacey Sowell, vice president of enrollment management and a Shaw alumna. “As an alumna, this is a deeply meaningful moment. We are not only welcoming more students, we are building momentum that positions Shaw for an exciting new chapter.”

A highlight of this year’s enrollment is the inaugural class of 128 Early College students, who joined through a groundbreaking partnership with Wake County Schools. The program allows high school students to earn college credit while completing their secondary education, creating a direct pipeline of academically talented and motivated students to Shaw.

“This partnership is historic for Shaw,” said Maso Cotton, Early College liaison. “We are proud to open doors for students to thrive in this unique academic pathway, and equally proud to see them embrace the opportunity.”

To support the incoming class, Shaw expanded orientation and student success programming. New initiatives include peer mentoring, academic readiness workshops and social activities designed to connect students with the broader campus community. University leaders say these steps are crucial for building a sense of belonging and ensuring long-term student achievement.

The university also credits its recent rebranding efforts and revitalized marketing campaigns for the surge in interest. Updated messaging highlighted Shaw’s history as the first HBCU in the South, its academic strengths and its vibrant student life, while also reaching new audiences through digital platforms and community engagement.

With this enrollment milestone, Shaw is not only rebuilding momentum after the challenges of the pandemic but also reinforcing its mission to educate and empower the next generation of leaders.
