Shaw University to Launch 2025 Academic Year with Opening Convocation Featuring Guest Speaker Andre Truss

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University will officially begin the 2025 academic year with its annual Opening Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. in Thomas J. Boyd Chapel. The event marks a time for the ShawU community to gather, celebrate new beginnings, and set the tone for a year of growth, learning and success.

This year’s keynote speaker is Andre Truss, co-founder and chief financial officer of Tellers Truss Wealth Group LLC. A business leader, former U.S. Marine Corps officer and dedicated mentor, Truss brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to service and personal development.

Born to Jamaican parents and raised in the Bronx, New York, Truss graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in quantitative economics. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served five years as an aviation supply officer, ultimately attaining the rank of captain. Recognized for his expertise in Lean Six Sigma and systems optimization, he was handpicked to serve as the Corps’ continuous process improvement officer.

While completing his military service, Truss co-founded Tellers Truss Wealth Group LLC, a firm specializing in real estate acquisitions and sales. The firm’s success led to an expansion into the restaurant industry with the launch of Flavor Hills Restaurant & Bar. Beyond his business ventures, Truss is passionate about mentoring and training individuals to enhance their personal and professional skills, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others achieve their full potential.

The Opening Convocation is open to ShawU students, faculty, staff, alumni and the wider community.
